Asking the way with Harry Potter (lesson 1)

I start with the slideshow and explain that we are doing asking the way with trains. then demonstrate the ieyasu and naotora convo with my JTE and explain the A/B information gap worksheets (thanks to Clare and Josh for this). After handing out the worksheets we go over the conversation structure (repeat after ALT) and then they start the activity. probably give them 10 or more minutes for this.

After that go to the slide with Hogwarts and ask them if they know the school and where it is etc. there is a video hidden under the picture of hogwarts so if you click again, the Harry Potter theme song will start and it gives them a hint but most kids know. Explain that we are doing asking the way with Harry potter and we will take the hogwarts express! again demo conversation with my JTE (yay! we made it to the forbidden forest with gifs). then i got kids into groups of 4 (they work in pairs but it meant I could make less A3 coloured maps) and handed out the A3 maps followed by a quick listening activity to check the kids can follow the train map.

After that, hand out the Harry Potter worksheet (i printed the A4 version of the map on the back so they can reference it later) and they work in pairs to write their own conversations. I had to explain really clearly that they must choose a station as a starting point then a place near the station as an end point otherwise they end at stations and cant say '____ is near the station'. I also had to tell them that they must have a change of train lines in their conversation. if you have time at the end, you can ask pairs to share their conversations!
