This is a read and run type game for directions. I think there's something like this in another lesson plan on the site, this one just has a different map etc.
(I haven't been able to try this game yet because the class I was supposed to have was taken up by an impromptu 45 minute life lesson from the JTE haha~ so if there's anything unclear that I didn't catch/anything to improve please let me know! The time is an estimate at the moment as well.)
First go over the direction dialogue and Idea Box vocabulary on page 10 if they aren't familiar with it!
Put the students into groups of 4.
Give each group a Map of Kyoto (attached).
Student #1 from each group comes to the front and gets a place. The name of the place is scrambled. The first goal is for the students to unscramble it.
When they know the place, the next step is to figure out the directions with their group. When they know their directions, student #1 must go to the JTE or ALT and tell them how to get to the place. (They can probably bring the map to help them remember!)
If they are correct, they get a hint. This hint is part of a word. (The word is Arashiyama, so they might get "ya"). The hints are on little paper cards, also attached!
When the students have given 5 directions, they'll have achieved 5 hints. They unscramble their hints to make the word. The first ones finished are the winners!
I attached the map of Kyoto, the scrambled words, and the hints. Make sure that there are enough for your class size^_^ I didn't bother to laminate anything.
