Hi team!

My JTE asked me to make a second lesson for `asking the way`using multiple modes of transport (only trains are mentioned in the textbook). I deceided to add busses and planes and use Scott`s amazing race idea!

I wanted to personalise this activity to me so I made a Wellington map (careful, doing this takes time!!) and I also made a Tokyo map (that leads to Hamamatsu) because i wanted them to use a plane too!

The goal of this activity is for the students to use a map to travel around 2 cities using multiple mode of transport by reading the directions given on the challenge slips.

Before class, I printed off the maps (enough copies of each map for each group) in colour on A3 paper and laminated them. I then printed off the challenges and cut them out into each piles of each challenge (you only need enough for one per group as I got them to return these challenge slips to me when they hand in their answer to collect the next challenge). Then, I printed off the answer sheets to go with (one for each group).

First, i went through the power point and revised what we learnt in the harry potter lesson and also introduced some useful vocab for plans and busses.
then, make groups (you can easily do lunch groups but my JTE has these special groups so we just used those, basically 4-5 in a team works well) I told them that the Amazing race is a game in which teams get challenges and have to read the directions to travel to new places and get the next challenge. I also told them that their answers needed to be full sentences (after handing out the first challenge, I wrote an example of the sentence structure on the board). to get the next clue, they must write their full sentence on the answer sheet and bring it to me to check it (I told them this had to be a different student each time) If correct, I sign in the box by the answer and they get the next challenge. If incorrect, they need to go back to their group and fix it.

Before starting the game, I handed out the answer sheets and the map of Wellington. I reiterate that this is called the Amazing RACE! so the winner is the team who gets through the most challenges (or completes the game first). Then got the first student of each group to come to the front and collect challenge 1.

To make it easier for myself, I had my JTE walk around the classroom and help the teams while I checked the answers. I had all challenges laid out in piles (eg pile of challenge number 1, pile of challenge number 2...) laid out facedown on my desk at the front. After checking their answers, I gave them the challenge from whatever pile they were up to and any materials needed (you need to give them the boarding passes with challenge 5 and the map of tokyo with challenge 6)

(will add maps later)
